Have you ever been out for dinner, or visiting friends and you hear, “you should stop burning the candle at both ends”? Perhaps you have had, “what is it you work so hard for, money won’t solve your problems” said to you?
If you have heard these things before you are likely what might be common referred to as a "go-getter" or maybe even a "hustler". when I give these labels, I am not referring the "hustle culture" that is rife with individuals putting on a social media persona of working hard. Rather, I'm talking about those of us who value genuine accomplishment, and have a vision for the future that they are willing to fight for.
Our vision is about fighting to solve societies looming problems, even if it means coming at the cost of our own sleep or time with our families. The journey these individuals are on is a hard one, and one that should not be looked down upon. These hard working and big dreaming folk are used to snide remarks, and being questioned by those who just want to enjoy their life. To be clear there is nothing wrong with just wanting to enjoy life, but when these folks poke fun at you for giving too much up, just remember the world has never been changed without sacrifice.
I personally believe that business can be good for doing more than just filling the pockets of shareholders. With that being said, I am not naive to the fact that this is often why business businesses are created and used, but frankly I do not have a tremendous issue with this. No one is being forced to buy the product that you are selling so I see no issue with lining your pockets thanks to the creations of a good product or service. I do however think that all businesses should put more consideration into the well-being of all of their stakeholders when operating. This means that when people are operating their business they should not only be looking out for their bottom line but also for their employees, customers, their community, the environment, and many many other things. The largely divisive part of this conversation is how we should ensure that businesses are not ignoring the needs of all of their stakeholders.
